SCRIPTURE READING: John 19:31-37

“...When they came to Jesus, they found he was already dead, and so instead of breaking his legs one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water. This is the evidence of one who saw it – trustworthy evidence, and he knows he speaks the truth – and he gives it so that you may believe as well...”

Questions for Meditation

1.      Why did the soldier pierce the side of Jesus?  What did he do to the other two crucified together with Jesus?

2.      Why did blood and water come out?  What is the significance of this?

3.      Why is the heart of Jesus called the ‘Sacred Heart’?  In what way is it similar to our hearts?  In what ways is it different from our hearts?

4.      In your personal opinion, what the image does the Sacred Heart give to you?

5.      According to Mother Teresa, “True love is when you love until it hurts”.  How does this apply to Jesus?

By Heart: for Reflection

The nine Friday promises of our Lord to St. Margaret Mary:

1.      I will give them all of the graces necessary for their state of life.

2.      I will establish peace in their houses.

3.      I will comfort them in all their afflictions.

4.      I will be their strength during life and above all during death.

5.      I will bestow a large blessing upon all their undertakings.

6.      Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.

7.      Tepid souls shall grow fervent.

8.      Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.

9.      I will bless every place where a picture of my heart shall be set up and honored.

10.  I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.

11.  Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be blotted out.

12.  I promise you in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant all to those who communicate on the First Friday in nine consecutive months the grace of final penitence; they shall not die in My disgrace nor without receiving their sacraments; My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment .

Intercessions:

1.      For the Pope, bishops and priests, that they may be witnesses of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in their life and ministry

2.      For conversion of sinners, that the mercy of God may be poured out for our friends and families who have not yet experienced the love of Jesus

3.      For peace in the homes, that parents and children may grow in love and understanding for one another

4.      For healing of broken hearts, that the love of God may touch those afflicted with anger, hurts and unforgiveness

5.      For Bro. Damien who will be ordained deacon, that he may be strengthened to follow Christ faithfully

6.      For those who have died, that they may rest securely in the arms of the Father

Covenant Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, by your suffering, death and resurrection, you give us new life:  a life filled with joy and purpose; a life only you can give it, for you are the source of life.  Guide us on our pilgrimage of life, that following you faithfully as your disciples, we may witness boldly to the world, your love and truth.  Enlighten our minds and hearts that your Word which we read and meditated may take roots in our lives.  Help us not to fall into sin and if we do fall due to our human weakness, bring us back to you for you are the way, the truth and the life. We also pray for all our brothers and sisters, wherever they are, who are committed to this prayer, that their faith may be strengthened, their hope assured and their love fulfilled.  In your name we humbly pray.  Amen
